Things You Should Know Regarding A Mole Trap

By Ann Perry

Moles are mammals which lives underground by digging tunnels in making them their homes with their powerful and big limbs and paws. Their high tolerance for carbon dioxide helps them breathe underground because of their special hemoglobin which is linked closely with oxygen. They efficiently use oxygen also by reusing their exhaled air.

Although these animals are considered agricultural pest in several countries because of the damages caused by their digging. This is why people use mole trap to get rid of them in their ground and protect their plants and machinery that gets destroyed by exposed stones. There are different type of traps which can be used in controlling them.

These animals do not physically harm or spread disease though but could damage your garden or lawn because of their worms and grubs diet. They could destroy the landscape you spent money to beautify your home including the plants and flowers there. Trapping them though will usually mean their death since non lethal traps have not been invented yet.

The first type is spear traps which are set above active tunnels and squished it down to have the spear on top. Its trigger is against the dirt and when the mole passes by the squished area, they will push it open, activating the trigger when it gets pushed up. This will cause the spears to slam down, impaling the animal in the process.

Scissor traps will be set above their active tunnels and their scissor blades are placed in ground with every side of the tunnel having one. When the mole crawls through it and triggers this then blades will kill the pest by snapping together. This is a very popular trap which was used for several decades because of the ease in setting it up.

Paper clip traps would be set inside tunnels with each one facing outwards to have them be triggered wherever the mole would be coming from. When the pest passes by, the pin holding this open will slip up and shuts down the crawler and kill it. But finding the correct tunnel is important for them to get effective because some are inactive.

These devices must have no scent to warn and alert these animals and the best choice for this are the new ones although older ones can work too. Thoroughly clean them then expose elements to them after and bury them for several days before you use them. Rub your hands with dirt before touching them to remove your scent and avoid it getting transferred on them.

The most effective area on where you could set up your devices are in their center parlor where the tunnels branch off. Follow the mounds they leave to find these parlors and you may look, touch and smell to find the freshest one. These mounds are where they usually get in and outside and where excavated dirt are dumped.

Digging the mound will probably let you find their main tunnel. Checking them using a long stick is helpful to find which area has less resistance felt. This is a great place to set your trap on.
