Austin Summer Drawing Classes Benefits Kids In All Kinds Of Ways

By Elizabeth Ellis

Well before the end of the school year most parents are planning summer activities for their kids. They know it won't take long before children start complaining they don't have anything to do. You may not be able to organize every day of their vacation, but you can enroll them in some camps that are actually affordable. In addition to fun, Austin summer drawing classes, for example, have long term positive benefits.

Taking an art class might not be the first thing you think about for your child, and your child might initially resist the idea. Even if your youngster has not shown much artistic talent, he will still enjoy putting his thoughts and ideas on paper. He will quickly learn that you can't fail at art. There aren't right and wrong answers, but art does require creative thinking and problem solving skills. Kids have to use their whole brains to develop these skills.

Good art teachers use creativity to bolster self-esteem in their young students. They know creating artworks increases dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a motivator. It helps kids stay focused and makes them more able to concentrate. This, in turn, allows them to resist distractions in order to achieve their goals. When your child brings home a piece of art, you should find a conspicuous place to hang it where it can be admired by everyone who passes by. You will give your child the gift of self-worth and a sense of accomplishment.

Art, in all its forms, helps kids achieve academically. It can increase IQ, attention spans, fluid intelligence, and brain flexibility. Music lessons improve a child's performances in reading, language and math. Both art and music curb a young child's normal impulsiveness and improve behavior. They stimulate the brain and increase blood flow to it.

Most people wouldn't think that art had anything to do with health, but it does. Therapists use art to help young patients express themselves freely. Those with chronic illnesses often find it difficult to put their fears and concerns into words. It is often easier for them to communicate through pictures. Art reduces the stress hormone, cortisol.

Art reduces stress for healthy kids too. It distracts the brain and allows it a chance to relax. Art can create a zone of concentration, as anyone who has become immersed in a painting or drawing can attest to. This is one of the ways art and meditation are similar.

There are special camps devoted to disabled and troubled kids. Art class is a big part of these camps. Most employ professional therapists who use painting, drawing, and sculpting to interact with kids suffering from physical, mental, and emotional crises. Children with learning disabilities are helped by working on art projects.

Even though they aren't in school, summer should be a time for learning and growing. That's not going to happen if you allow your kids to sit on the couch and text, play video games, and chat on social media. Finding a good camp, and encouraging your child to attend and participate is a much better option.
