Some promoters have college educations and others don't. Experts in the field say whatever your level of education, you must learn how to write. Most people aren't naturals writers, so that means taking courses in English grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. You have to be able to write great press releases. There are other skills you must master before anyone will consider you for a job promoting concerts. You could start a blog that addresses the club and music scene in the city in which you are attending college. You have to learn how to photograph bands in clubs and how best to manipulate the pictures to enhance the quality, making them something people will notice. These pictures can be posted on social media.

Most successful promoters agree that anyone interested in the business has to first become a performer. You could learn to be a DJ or take guitar lessons. Whatever you decide to do, you need to stick with it so you will understand the performers you are booking and what is takes to put on a show. You need to know how best to set up a band's gear and how to break it down.

When you begin your job search, you must have a relevant resume. Managers want to see writing samples and blogs when they interview job candidates who are looking for entry level positions. Qualified applicants will be proficient in graphics editing and with spreadsheets. Serious candidates will know the music scene and have strong opinions about which promoters they respect and why.

Being detail oriented is a must in this kind of business. You must also decide the kind of promoter you want to be. Some promoters are known for the parties they throw. Others specialize in booking the hottest celebrities into clubs that want all the publicity that brings.

The most successful promoters started by attending shows that were diverse in nature. They went to operas and rock concerts, electronic dance music festivals and jazz clubs. They studied what happened between sets, the type of security various groups used, and even who many drinks a bartender poured.
